Each of Top Honors’ three weekly tutoring sessions has its own cohort of volunteer tutors, so it’s only at these events that volunteers get to know one another.  And boy, do we love it when the entire family’s together.

By the looks of these photos, you might be thinking that all our tutors are female.  Not so!  We have an even distribution of male and female tutors that make up our volunteer base.  We also have an even distribution of male and female tutors that attend our volunteer events.  What we do not have is an equal distribution of male and female tutors who don’t mind bright iPhone flashes blinding their eyes.

Nonetheless, we ended the evening impressed by Jeff’s impressive score of 133 and Charlie’s whopping 155.  The ladies also held their own with top scorers Robyn with 102 and Cat with 126.  Well done!

We found ourselves moved to the gym on our first day back, which turned out to be a fun change because, hey, look, our students not only had room to dance, but they can dance!  Who knew?!

What you see here was part of today’s group game, one based on the math behind musical notation.  Dancing to your favorite beats – now there’s a fun, real-world application of math right there.

While the majority of our volunteers are working professionals, some high school, college, and graduate students also tutor at Top Honors.  Enrolled in some of the city’s top high schools and university programs, they somehow make the time for our students every Saturday despite their rigorous academic commitments.

(Let’s not let this photo perpetuate the stereotype that members of a certain ethnic group and math go together like bread and butter.  Asians actually do not make up the majority of our volunteers at Top Honors!)
