Full House in January

Behind the Scenes

It may not be evident when you see our dozens of tutors working with our students on tutoring days, but to make our volunteer-based organization run like the well-oiled machine it is, there’s a considerable amount of work that goes on in the background. Our team meets on a regular basis to keep our operational efforts in check, to discuss ways of maximizing the limited resources we have, and to improve existing protocols. It’s a whole lot of work, and sometimes it involves some crossed arms and hours and hours of giving it all we’ve got, but without fail, by the end of each meeting, we always deliver the best for our students…because they deserve it.

Math, Even in Rio

Our tutors go to crazy lengths to help their students understand math concepts.  When Top Honors closed for the holidays for a couple weeks, one of them went hang gliding.  We can’t think of a better way to conceptualize negative numbers.

If a tutor goes hang gliding and takes off from a cliff that is 246 m high, what integer could describe the direction of his descent back to land?

Answer: -246

For those of you with your thinking hats on, yes, this situation has Pythagorean Theorem written all over it (the length of the hand glider’s trajectory and the horizontal distance from the base of the cliff to the landing point).

Early

You’ll never guess who dropped by to tutor this week.

Remember Salman Khan?

Well said, Mr. Khan. Bravo.

Salman Khan is the founder of Khan Academy, a not-for-profit organization that provides free online math tutorials. He has taken a digital step into the classroom. Click here to read the New York Times report on Salman Khan’s continuing endeavor to make math accessible.

Our Troops

Top Honors volunteer tutors form the backbone of our program.  We believe that the stronger the tutor camaraderie, the greater the potential for our tutors to offer the best possible instruction and mentorship to our students.

Counting Our Thanks

…our students who bring their “A” game every week.
…our loyal volunteers who form the backbone of our program.
…our generous grantors and donors who make our mission possible.
…our students’ parents and caregivers for their support.
…our local community for allowing us to provide free math tutoring for ten years.
